Why Your Dog Doesn’t Respond To The Come Command

It is very frustrating when a dog doesn’t respond to the come command. I hate it when he stands there just looking at me. In fact it’s even dangerous with cars running by and children playing around. At time he just wanders of, or chases a squirrel and I have no means of controlling him. I know I shouldn’t take him off leash until he obeys the command perfectly, but how will I know if that moment has arrived when I never let him off the leash?

I looked for advice online and found many methods that should have worked very well… on a normal dog.

So I tried lying down on the cold and wet ground in an effort to get him to come. It actually worked the first couple of times and I used every occasion to put him straight on the leash. Big mistake. He knows now that the leash is his “reward” for listening.

I tried running the other way. Initially this worked well, but again, as I always put the leash on him he stopped coming. Besides I looked rather silly when running away from my dog like a madman. Someone actually thought I had a drinking problem.

I used to get furious when my dog wouldn’t come when called. At times I was so frustrated that I would punish him when he finally arrived, which is the worst thing one can do.

It was time for a change. I decided that I should start training him the right way. Since then, in just two little 15 minute daily training sessions he has made a lot of progress. I make sure I reward him instead of punishing him and I don’t leash him every time he comes.

The funny thing is, we get along much better these days. I give him a treat randomly for showing up when he’s called for. I found out that I just needed to invest some time and use the correct reward system to motivate him.
