What New Owners Should Know About The Essential Pet Supplies
Every species is different, and every pet is more unique still. However, most pet types have at least some needs in common. You, as a new owner, need to know what essential pet supplies you will need before you introduce your new pet to your home. You can get them even more supplies, but make sure the basics are covered!
If you buy a dog, you will need all the basic supplies. Food bowls, a leash and collar, and a bed or crate. The collar should have ID. Research and decide on a food type based on the dog: its size, breed, age and health will all factor in. Toys are a worthwhile investment to keep the dog entertained.
Cats will cost a little less to set up in your home. A post can keep your home safe from a bored cat. Food bowls should be stainless steel or, if that is not available, at least high impact plastic. You should set your cat up with one or more beds; you may need to search to find one your cat is comfortable with.
There are many rodents that make excellent pets, such as hamsters. For food, buy your hamster pellet rather than seeds unless you are prepared to monitor its eating habits. Bedding should be purchased in abundance; it should be replaced often, absorbent, and deep enough for the hamster to dig through. The hamster will need a chew toy. You do not want to let it chew its cage.
A new reptile will need a tank. Don’t choose one that is too small, because the animal can become unhealthy. Too big can also be a problem, as some species grow to fit the tank they are provided with. A water source is a must. Do not buy your reptile without researching food. If it needs live food, such as crickets, you will need additional materials.
Get a heat lamp if you choose a reptile or an amphibian. Frogs will also need a few extra supplies. Although both types like plants, frogs need them. A thermometer and humidity gauge should be purchased, as well as a substrate (a loose chipped floor covering). Clean water is necessary for amphibians and certain species of reptile like turtles.
Like reptiles and amphibians, fish will need a tank. However, fish need a pump and filter. You will need a heater and thermometer. You should line the bottom of the tank with gravel, and make sure you have a fish net from day one (in case you need to remove the fish). Fish are easy to feed, as most will enjoy floating food flakes. All aquarium tanks require dedicated cleaning supplies and time to clean the tank!
Birds need a good cage. Size and design do matter. A parrot will be cramped in a finch cage, and a finch could easily escape from a parrot cage. Wood and rope perches are good; seed is a breed specific food that you absolutely need. Treats are also breed specific.
Everybody loves puppies. In Toronto puppies are the most popular 1st pet for couples, families and singles. Living in the city can be tough on a dog so as an owner. Make sure you visit pet stores Mississauga to help care for your pet.
