Ways To Stop Your Puppy From Biting
Puppies can make fun and adorable companions, but sometimes they can have a nasty habit of biting. If you’re looking for ways to stop your puppy from biting, read on!
Puppies are very impressionable at their young age, which means that you have a great opportunity to teach a puppy right from wrong, and these teachings will stay with the dog as he grows older.
While you will probably want to teach your puppy that biting is not an acceptable behavior, you should be aware that it’s perfectly natural and expected for puppies to bite once in awhile. With just a few simple methods, however, you can teach a puppy that biting is an undesirable behavior.
To begin training your puppy not to bite, refrain from playing highly aggressive games such as wrestling and tug of war. Playing these games will only make your puppy associate biting as a positive behavior, so avoid these types of games whenever possible.
Puppies are young, and biting is actually an instinctive behavior for them, so they don’t yet realize that biting is wrong. Make sure your puppy understands that he shouldn’t bite by addressing him directly and clearly. Speak in a confident, assertive tone and your puppy will listen to you and understand you.
One popular way of teaching puppies not to bite is to act as if the bite hurts very badly. You can do this by saying “Ow!” in a high-pitched voice when the dog bites.
The point of this exercise is to surprise the puppy by shouting out, then refuse to play with him for a few minutes. The puppy will learn that when he bites, he hurts his playmate.
These are just a few easy ways to discourage your puppy from biting. There are many other methods as well, but no matter which way you choose to train your puppy, you should never inflict physical harm on him as this can have very negative consequences down the road.
