Using A Cat Condo To Save Your Furniture

Nothing drives a cat owner up a wall more than having the cat that they love and cherish pay them back by raking their claws over the corner of the sofa. Once they find this as a spot, it is very tough to get them away from doing it all the time. In order to prevent this, it is best to train them in a cat condo.

A cat condo (cat tree) is a piece of pet furniture that stands from two or three feet tall to as high as seven or eight feet tall. They are built with scratching posts, ramps, houses and toys attached to them. It is literally everything that a cat could want and more.

The cat condo’s can be found readily on the Internet and are in all shapes and sizes. The smallest ones that have only one tier can be found for about $20. If you want to get a true palace for your cat, you can get something in the $200 range that will have every cat in the neighborhood in a jealous fit.

Getting the cat to use the perch is the biggest challenge, but it is not very hard. To get them to use this instead of the sofa for sharpening their claws, you need to let them know it is okay to rake their cat condo. We did this by pressing their paw to extend their claws and raking them across the poles. The cat looked at us like we were nuts, but she quickly realize that this was okay for her to do.

When trying to keep the cat from lying on the furniture, it is best to get them over to the cat condo with treats and then reward them again once they actually get on it. We trained our cat by giving her the daily treats on the highest perch. Within days she ran up there every morning to get her treats.

Cat condos cost a little bit of money up front, but they are more than worth the money that is spent on them. Not only are you saving your furniture from claw marks and cat hair buildups, but the cat is going to love it. Set it up by the window and then will sit there all day and night.
