The Proper Spelling of German Shepherd

I was shocked to find out that about 1 in any 3 folks write out the word German Shepherd incorrectly, calling them German Shepards rather. I’m amazed that this breed of dog is so commonly mistyped, & I’m even more stunned to know that I spelled it like this for so many of my life.

I dislike spelling words incorrect and I consistently attempt to avoid it. I’m always careful to make sure that I’m on point with my spelling, however like any person, occasionally I just mess up. The great thing is that I have an easy way to remember how to spell this breed of dog correctly.

Follow my simple method here & you most certainly will always recall that it’s not German Shepards, but shepherds.

Think back to why this kind of canine was bred and perhaps you will quickly figure this out. The German Shepherd was bred as a labor dog, & it was only at the turn of the century that this breed came to existence.

People in Germany wanted a dog to help herd sheep. Think of the words herd & sheep now, & then reverse them. You do not think of the German Shepards (I’m kidding) now as sheep herding dogs, as they are usually used by law enforcement to fight crime, in airports to sniff out substances, and in other situations that depend on the dog’s great sense of smell.

This, however, is why they happened to be bred, & remembering this should make it much easier to write the word accurately.

As long as you seek to keep this in mind every time you write or type out the word, I suppose you most certainly will get it right from here. Don’t feel too badly regarding it since one in 3 individuals do spell it incorrectly.

I hope this has been informative. Here’s to a couple of spelling successes in the future when it comes to this wonderful type of canine.
