Guinea pigs make wonderful pets, and they make truly delightful companions for one another! My squeeze and I have two rabbits and three guinea pigs, and it is fascinating to see their unique personalities interact.

Now before you think of me as some fuzzy-minded animal-lover – hear me out. I was basically not very much for pets at first, believing those pests and, at best, a drain on the household budget. And indeed, my perspectives have not modified where that’s concerned. They sure eat a lot and cost a pretty penny!

But that viewpoint is now being balanced out by one that has come to grasp all of the positive aspects to pet ownership, too. And it’s like explaining one of those jokes you just had to be there for to get.

So for me to now say it’s delightful watching them eat out of your hand may seem not very exciting news. Big deal, you’ll potentially shrug, much as I did at first. But there are such funny moments, superb events which i have seen with my personal 2 eyes that i would not have thought otherwise, that I’ll really say that having these rabbits and guinea pigs has truly improved my life.

I have in mind how our little black dwarf rabbit, Blackie Ballwinger, likes to groom everybody. He is also likes licking kissing? Someone! And he is always getting chased around, either by the much larger Bullet Munchies, some kind of an Angora rabbit mix, bullying him around, or Sicky or Wilbur, two guinea pigs, who try to have sex with him!

Yes, it’s unusual, but absolutely correct ; 2 of our guinea pigs are generally trying to pal with a rabbit and they are all males! This is the kind of eye-opening and belly-splitting experience you can only get when you have pets.

When you’re thinking of buying a rabbit it can be fun for the whole family. In fact, the choosing might be the hard part since there are more than 40 rabbit breeds to take your pick from. There are also many different coloured rabbits, so it is interesting to see which ones appeal to your family the most. In addition to these facts, the size of the rabbit in general can vary greatly and you may find that they can be weigh over 10 pounds, in which case you will need to make sure you know what you’re doing with rabbits and have a good understanding of general rabbit care.

Many breeders give different answers regarding the preferred gender for a pet rabbit. A lot of the differences are dependent on how people look after their rabbit. Often a doe (girl rabbit) that is not spayed, can become territorial was she reaches maturity. It is fair to say that some female rabbits will have a tendency to nip at their owners if they get too close or invade their private space. Providing the same person feeds the rabbit regularly, the aggression felt by the doe should subside. It does vary between different female rabbits, and some will be very aggressive whereas others will be completely placid. For those that are looking for a friendly female bunny, the best thing to do is to get her spayed at an early age. This is a good long-term plan for your rabbit care approach.

Something else worth thinking about when working out your rabbit care plans is the grooming side of things. There are some breeds that require more grooming than others and you will find that this is quite a time-consuming process. The wool rabbit breeds will need quite a bit of time spent on them to ensure their grooming is properly done.

If you’re serious about buying a rabbit, it is wise to make sure you don’t buy from a pet store without seeing the animal first. Choose a breed you like and do your research, then try to find a rabbit breeder in the local area. Next, head over to visit the breeder and the rabbits they have. Have a look around the rabbit area and note down what the conditions are like. During your visit, ask nicely if you are able to just pick a rabbit up for a bit and hold it in your arms. Watch the rabbit’s reaction to their cage being opened. Those happy rabbits in the hutch will come hopping forward hoping you will pick them up. In some cases though, rather timid rabbits will move backwards as though they don’t want picking up. Look out for these signs as they could indicate that the rabbit won’t make a good pet.

Searching for a rabbit should be fun, but you should also make sure you think about all the important details that rabbit care involves. With many sizes and different colours to choose from, it is hoped that you will eventually find that perfect rabbit for your family.

From vegetables to water and hay, a rabbit’s diet isn’t particularly varied but it provides them with what they need. Fruit and other treats are given only in very limited quantities, as they can cause obesity in a rabbit. Because of the fact rabbits can dehydrate quite quickly, a constant water supply is essential to keep them healthy. So, here is some vital information about rabbit food.

Pellets

Many rabbits get fed pellets which can be bought from a variety of different outlets…you may even want to try looking online for a good deal. An interesting fact is that pellets were once primarily used by the breeders who needed inexpensive food.

Hay

Of course, we all know that rabbits need some hay. A steady supply of hay will help prevent digestive tract problems in rabbits. As well as this, hay is also full of vitamins which your rabbit needs. You’ll be hard pushed to find a rabbit that doesn’t enjoy chewing hay, and apart from anything else it is a great boredom solver.

Treats

Rabbit food also comes in the form of treats. But do bear in mind that treats can be very unhealthy if you give them out too often. Most treats sold in pet stores are filled with sugar and high food energy carbohydrates. One of the healthiest ways you can treat your rabbit is to feed it fruit.

Acceptable fruits (seeds and pips MUST be removed): Banana, Mango, Pineapple, Peach, Apple, Kiwi, Berries, Orange and other citrus fruits.

As previously mentioned, all fruits and treats should be just that; a treat and not an everyday feeding ritual. A good tip is to make sure that the rabbit’s diet doesn’t consist of any more than ½ a tablespoon of treats each day. Just make sure your rabbit doesn’t get more than half a tablespoon of treats a day.

It is also important to remember that rabbits less than 4 months old shouldn’t be fed fruit because it doesn’t digest easily. It can cause enteritis that causes death within 48 hours.

Please also note that lettuce isn’t recommended either, as it can also cause rabbit death due to the lack of nutritional value.

Cecal pellets

Do not be alarmed if you see your rabbit eat some of his faeces. What many people don’t realise is that these faeces are called ‘cecal’ pellets and rabbits get a lot nutritional value from eating them. A rabbit needs to stay healthy, and cecal pellets help to give your bunny a good supply of vitamin B12. Rabbits need to eat their faeces because they don’t get the same nutrients from their food. Don’t panic though, as this is normal practice.

Are you thinking of getting a rabbit for a family pet? There are a number of things to take into consideration before picking a pet for kids. Take into consideration the size, habitat, and eating habits of any animal before you take it on as a family pet.

One pet that many families consider is the rabbit. It seems like an ideal pet because of its size, manor, and eating habits. The only drawback of owning a rabbit is dealing with some of the animals natural actions. Rabbits are not the type of pet that likes to be held and snuggled.

When you try to hold a rabbit against its will they may try to bite, kick, or scratch trying to get free of your grip. Young children who want to hold and play with a pet shouldn’t be given a rabbit. Rabbits just aren’t social in nature, like cats and dogs.

In addition to being hard to hold, rabbits take a good deal of time to feel at home in their new environment. It is also a lengthy process for them to bond with their owner. It takes time and patience to work with a rabbit before it even considers itself at home as a family pet. Children are usually not satisfied with this type of behavior from their family pet.

Rabbits can also be destructive. It is their natural habit to chew through anything in their environment. Anything inappropriate for chewing should be kept away from your rabbit. A rabbit will just as easily chew up cables and electrical wires as shoes and furniture legs. The size or shape doesn’t matter. Rabbits just chew.

The last thing you should keep in mind is that rabbits require time and attention. Rabbits must be fed pellets or fruits and vegetables. They are herbivores and will not eat any meat. Their cage has to be cleaned every day, and they have to be supplied with fresh water constantly. When getting supplies, you can find cheap rabbit cages online. It’s a lot of work to own a rabbit as a pet, however, for some individuals, rabbits make ideal pets.
