Stop Your Golden Retriever From Jumping Up Using These Training Tips
As any dog fan knows, dogs like to express their love. And, as any dog fan also knows, a dog’s means of doing this isn’t always appropriate. Some breeds keep it simple with tail wagging. Golden Retrievers, most notably, tend to go overboard and jump up on their owners and guests, among other things. Applying the correct golden retriever training can stop and prevent your dog from going this route
First, avoid pushing your dog away when he jumps on you. Simply because the dog understands this as playing so he will do it again and again!
Next, raise your knee when he jumps. The dog should get back down naturally.
Keep raising your knee gently whenever the dog jumps up until he/she learns
When your Golden gets down, give him ample praise and occasionally reward him with a treat. This reinforces the good behavior of not jumping up on people.
You may also try to “ignore” your Golden Retriever when he jumps. When it gets down give your pet praise. Your dog should begin to associate jumping with a lack of attention.
Try some of these tips if you find that the above are not working well:
When your dog jumps on you, tap him gently on the nose then ignore it until it gets down. Remember that your dog will not recognize that you don’t like jumping until you show him that.
When your pet doesn’t jump up, you’ll want to reward this behavior with praise and, every once in a while, a treat.
Try using a squirt gun, giving a little splash on the dog’s nose when he jumps. Dogs don’t care for this, in my experience, and you can end the jumping behavior when using this technique consistently.
Training your Golden Retriever can be a time consuming process. Patience and repetitiveness are rewarded with desired behavior. Any of the above training tips done once or infrequently won’t be effective, and will only result in a frustrated pet…and owner.
