Should I Consider Breeding My Bulldog?

Should I consider breeding my bulldog? This is a very good question. Many times pet owner’s love their dogs and they want to experience the fun of being able to raise a bulldog litter. Well, there is not much I dislike more than some snob who is stuck up and only willing to sell their dogs having limited AKC reg. What this will mean is that your dog is only a pet and will never be able to be bred. Or rather, your dog can not be bread and still have the puppies be registered in accordance with the AKC. I don’t understand what would make a breeder feel that they are so special that it us up to them to decide that they can breed bulldogs, however nobody who they sell to will ever be able to have a litter produced from a puppy of theirs. This really irks me like little else can. How much more self-centered can one person be?

However, after saying all that, there can be some good reasons to strongly think about this before you seriously consider ever breeding your English bulldog. First of all, it can certainly be a great deal of work as well as expense.

Aside from the work that goes into raising a litter of puppies, you should consider the quality of your animal. Does your pet meed traditional AKC standards for the breed? If not, by breeding your pet you are perpetuating traits that are considered undesirable amongst the breed. While your pet may be perfectly healthy and lovable, if he or she does not meet standards according to the AKC, you may want to think twice about breeding.

Secondly, there would be the consideration of cost. Most people who breed English Bulldogs will have to pay a stud service. Stud service for a well-put together stud dog will range around $600 to $800. This does not guarantee the puppies will look like Dad, or that you get a large litter. It just gets you the breeder. Most breeders who offer stud service will offer a repeat breeding at no charge if your female does not take the first time. However, this is typically limited to those people who do progesterone tests to verify the female is in heat and has ovulated before she is bred. If your vet draws blood and does 4 progesterone tests you have probably spent an additional $200 to $400 depending on your vet fees. Then there is the cost of breeding. You might A.I. the dog yourself. But if your vet does the A.I. or a surgical implantation of the semen it will run you another $150 to $1000. Yes, that is right. As much as $1000. Then there is the C-section. Be prepared to shell out another $300 to $1500 for the C-section. And that is assuming your dog does not come into labor in the weekend, at night. In which case your C-section fee might end up costing $1500 to $3000. As you can see, you could easily end up spending $2000 to $5000 just to produce a litter of pups. And you might only end up with a single pup, and there is no guarantee that pup even lives….

Aside from cost, raising a litter of puppies is very time consuming. Puppies must be fed every two hours and while the mother is capable, you will need to ensure she is performing her duties and raising a little of healthy pups. If your bitch is a first time mother, she may require assistance in taking care of her pups. This means long hours staying up with your pups and making sure they are getting adequate food. If she is not, you may need to hand feed them until they are able to suckle themselves. This type of dedication means you are practically raising a litter of puppies as though you had no mother taking care of them.

With all of these points considered, if you are still considering breeding your bulldog, then it is likely you will have an enjoyable experience. If your pet is not AKC limited, then you will be able to sell your pets offspring and have them be able to be AKC registered as well. English bulldog pups can fetch anywhere between $1500 to $2000 per pup, with litters around six to eight pups a piece. It is possible to make a profit from raising puppies, but it should not be counted on.
