Pet Health Care

Anyone who has a pet will tell you they’re as much a part of the family as anyone else. This is why pet health care is as important as human health care. Because vet bills can be costly, it’s important to take on some simple advice to keep your pet healthy and avoid illness in later life.

Bigger animals such as cats and dogs must be vaccinated when they are puppies and kittens. This can be expensive, but shouldn’t be forgotten. Vaccinating your pet saves money and heartache in the long run since these simple injections protect against life threatening conditions.

Cats and dogs must also be treated for fleas, ticks and worms. Medication to prevent these pests may seem costly, but prevention is definitely better than cure and this is indispensible to guarantee your pet’s wellbeing and happiness.

A major part of pet health care is making sure your pet is happy and comfortable. A suitable place to sleep is vital. Cats may not stick to one single place, instead choosing to curl up on your sofa. But dogs should have a warm bed. Even small pets like hamsters and rabbits need a warm, comfortable place to sleep. Although hamster bedding can be bought in pet shops, they are just as happy with shredded paper.

Your pet’s diet is also very important to their health. It sounds like a joke, but pet obesity is on the increase in the UK, so choose their food carefully. Fatty milk isn’t great for cats, so save it for treats only. It’s easy to get into the habit of feeding your dog human food from the table. A little human food is ok, but always remember your dog has his own food too, so shouldn’t be eating too much of yours. Rabbits will appreciate a variety of fresh vegetables.

Exercise is very important for pets. Even small hamsters need to be able to run about, so you should give them the biggest cage you can. You should also let your hamster out of its cage to exercise; many pet shops sell small plastic balls for them to run around in. Be careful though, hamsters are great escape artists and easily lost if you take your eye off them. Cats can be relied upon to get their exercise themselves, but it’s worth using toys to keep them active. When it’s cold outside, some cats are reluctant to go out, even though you feel sorry for your cat, a gentle push in the right direction is good for them. Dogs love a good walk, so it’s no problem to give them the exercise they need. It’s important to give your dog the right amount of exercise as too much can be bad for him. Bigger dogs normally require longer walks.

These rules are very simple, but are very effective in promoting a healthy lifestyle for your pet. Always make sure your pet is given a vet check up once a year, but remember that a healthy lifestyle is vital to pet health care. This advice could save you money and heartache by preventing illness in your pet.
