Look After Your Pet Rabbit With Regular Grooming

Rabbits are incredibly clean little creatures, priding themselves in grooming. They can spend hours each day grooming themselves in order to keep their skin healthy and their coat glossy. But please don’t think that grooming is something you do not have to help with as an owner. To be a responsible pet owner you need to devise a comprehensive rabbit care plan, which you and your family stick to.

Firstly, take the time to brush your rabbit every day.The rabbit will love being brushed and will develop a bond with you if you are gentle. The health advantages of brushing your pet rabbit include the removal of any dead hairs that your rabbit might otherwise swallow.Once swallowed these hairs could form a hairball that can compromise your rabbit’s digestive system.Fur balls often need to be removed at some expense by a vet, so the simple task of brushing every day not only benefits your rabbit but also saves you money. When you’re brushing your rabbit remember that the standard rabbit sheds its old coat approximately every three months, during this period of time increase how often of your brushing and you’ll be dumbfounded at how much hair comes off the tiny body.
Remember that your rabbit is a sensitive animal so do not use a hard, metal brush. Go for something softer that wont damage the skin.Rabbits really are beautiful little creatures, and a well groomed one will look simply gorgeous.A caring pet owner will not see brushing as a chore and will understand that they are helping to keep the rabbit healthy and free of pests.Rabbits with long hair can suffer from matting, so try and keep the length manageable either by visiting a grooming salon or cutting it yourself at home. This help keep the rabbit’s coat clean and free of mats but also keeps the rabbit more comfortable during the hot summer.
You need to be really careful when cutting your rabbits fur and if your rabbit tends to fidget or run off then this is perhaps one task that is best left to the experts.A patch of matted hair can in some cases be combed out, so don’t instantly grab the scissors and cut it off.A patch of matted hair is often really close to the skin of the rabbit, so if you really cannot remove it by brushing please speak with your vet or go to a specialist grooming centre.
The nails are another area to watch. If you consider they’re looking long, or realize that they are beginning to catch on your carpeting or the floor of the hutch then it is time to trim them.As this is a tricky task (rabbits don’t like having their nails cut!)  you should leave it to the professionals.
