Koi Pond Design – Tips for Getting the Plumbing Right
There are many things to consider when you are starting a Koi pond project. It’s easy to see why so many people forget to pay attention to the plumbing aspect of the project. This is a mistake I hope you won’t make. A lot of headaches can be avoided if you pay proper attention to the pipe and valve layout of your project before you get started.
Lay out a schematic of all the piping and valves you plan to use. This will allow you to take a look at the whole project before you start. You can make sure you have the right size pipe in the right places to do the needed job. Make sure you know the types of valves you want to use, whether there will be any sections of piping underground and whether there will be any sections under pressure.
There are always many questions about the type of piping and valves to use. When comes to piping there both flexible piping and rigid plastic piping. The flexible piping is very versatile but it can’t handle the various valves and other equipment you will probably want to have in your system. I would avoid this type and only consider using it when rigid piping just can’t be used.
Rigid plastic pipe is always the best choice for any Koi pond. It will look the best and give the best long term, durable installation. Make sure you use the size pipe for the job at hand. For example, don’t use a 1 in. pipe for the floor drain in a gravity-fed system and them be surprised when it won’t work as you anticipated. It’s too small. You need at least a 4 in. pipe for this kind a drain.
Before gluing solvent-weld connections (always use solvent-weld piping) place the valves and piping in place for a “dry run.” Once they’re glued they will never come apart. Mark all pieces so you’ll know later which pieces go where.
Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation of all equipment. You would be surprise how many people think they have a better way to do it. Also use plenty of valves before and after various components so they can be isolated and/or removed for repair and maintenance.
Not having the right valve combination for isolation will probably mean you will have to go to the trouble and expense of cutting out the equipment for repair or replacement. Remember always use a slide or ball valve before the filtration system so it can be isolated from the pond for cleaning.
These simple steps should make your Koi pond project go a lot faster with better results and less money out of your pocket. Follow these tips and you are on your way to a successful Koi pond project.
