Keep The Pet’s Safe – Buy Pet Travel Accessories

Dogs do not enjoy so many things more than ice cream, cheese and rides in the car. Riding the car is always something to look forward to by every dog that we ever had. Dogs, similar to people, also get fed up with things and they want to go out and relax once in a while.

In the past years, safety of pets inside the car was never an issue for us. We allow our dogs to just go around on the back portion of the station wagon, sometimes even in the front portion (as a matter of fact, our dogs choose the front seat more often – gives them a better look on the outside and make them feel proud like the Big Dog!) and with no restraints. Back then, we did not have any gadgets that are now existing to make our pets safer during travelling. Basically they were allowed to run around under our feet, jump in our laps from window to window, with licks of thank you for taking them to town – and all of this was done while trying to drive!

Then again, one drawback of taking pets to the vet, or just to town can distract you on your driving. We had a Siberian Husky when my son was still young. Every time we go to school, she was allowed to come along. I usually rolled the window down a little so she could get some fresh air and check out the different smells. This one certain morning, distracted by her jumping in the front seat because of a squirrel she saw ran across the road, caused us to land on the ditch. My son hit his head on the windshield (there were no seatbelts then) – everybody was fine, but that experience was a good illustration of how pets can cause car accidents. Lest you had to unexpectedly step on the brakes, a tiny dog with no fetters on could be tossed down to the floor, or a bigger dog could be thrown into the front glass of the car or out of the vehicle. One of these or other situations is sure to traumatize both pet and owner.

At the present time, we have grown more conscious of our safety that’s why gadgets and devices were produced to ensure us a safer ride for our families and pets (part of the family, as well). Doggy seat belts, harnesses, pet crates, barriers, door pop/unlock systems to get your pet out fast in case of an accident, heat alarms that protect your pet from heat stroke or cold temperatures, and fans to help keep our pets cooler. Limiting the movements of your pet will make the trip more pleasant for everyone on board. Restricting your pet’s movements in the car should be equally vital as putting your seat belt on and for other passengers as well.

Further more guidelines to enjoy a danger-free ride are position your pet on the back seat of the car with restraints (air bags are a potential danger to the dog), don’t allow your dog to jut his head out the window – despite how much your dog pleads – as this can harm the eyes due to dust or dirt, never smoke inside the car, don’t let the dog sit on your lap, do not ever leave your dog in the car unaccompanied on a hot or cold day. Yearly, hundreds of pets get killed due to heat exhaustion or exposure to the cold. Never let your dog ride in the bed of a pickup unrestrained. Place them in a cage or crate and fasten it on the pickup so that it will not move about during the journey.

If you are going to take a road trip with your best friend, make sure you have water for your pet to drink, some favorite toys and bedding or blanket from home to add some familiarity to its surroundings.

To be safe, children need to buckle their seat inside the car as well as your pet needs to have his doggy seatbelt on.
