Introducing A Dog To A Cat Family

My heart was pumping as I softly closed the door, my three musketeers snoozing unaware. As if counselled by a psychic of my secret rendezvous they had cleverly aligned this meeting of new friends became a war of dislike,. As my body began melting my composure returned, who would be the general and take on this command? Who would show bravery in this moment in time? The moments seemed like hours as the room seemed to spin until Romeo the love god began his great move. “Hi their young poodle welcome to our gang”. His silent voice bellowing to all corners of the room Romeo the stray cat that came and never left, an angel in transit had welcomed this boy in.

The new, black miniature poodle named by the previous owner Jessie, had been passed on to us due to the owner going overseas. On meeting he seemed a genuine guy, cute as a button with meaningful eyes. We had probably broken some cardinal rule, as little Jessie had never been exposed to, you guessed it cats. I was utterly convinced that after a suitable period of getting to know each other they would eventually be great mates. Well two out of three is not too bad. So here we stood all five of us wondering who was going to make the first move.

It should have been no surprise that loveable rogue Romeo would be the one to greet this petrified poodle with a loving embrace. You could almost hear a pin drop as we imagined his voice. “Hey there young Jessie welcome to the fold” As if the ice was truly broken Auntie Lucy followed suit and meowed her approval as she walked out the door. Ruby, the Queen of our home seemingly disinterested as she stood quietly by the door, no sign of dissension not a single transgression of a rebuff was in sight. Without any warning like a spark to a flame, my royal star ended this standoff with a bang. In a flash she was mobile, no paws on the ground as she raced toward Jessie hissing and growling. As I scooped up Queen Ruby with no moments to spare I avoided poor Jessie from a trip to the vet.

That was the first meeting and it has been two weeks since then. I will not say there is peace in the valley, but my sheer determination to have a happy little family is paying off. Romeo is in love with Jessie and follows us halfway down the road where he waits for us to return from the park or a leisurely walk. I truly believe in a spiritual world now where soul mates find each other even if they are different animals. Say what you want but from the first day these two guys had something special and it will always be a beautiful thing to see. Lucy is a sweetheart a little trooper when it comes to her new nephew. Even when he is boisterous she lets out a gentle meow as if to say. That is enough you are getting too rough. It seems to work he generally walks away.

So what of Queen Ruby did she bite the bullet and become Jessie’s friend, do not be disappointed as her stance has remained If Jessie had come into a home with only one other cat my execution may have been different and I would have considered replacing him to avoid potential chaos. But in this case my family being larger than life I have called on some genius to ensure the happiness of them both. Like a mum with a new baby I have used tactics to embrace, the differences between these children that may never be resolved. If your cats and dogs are in the trenches with their guns steadily aimed, remember you love them and god bless you for that.
