How To Stop Dog Aggression
Aggression is a part of a dog’s nature. Being pack animals, dogs have to be aggressive to be able to defend themselves against predators and to be able to hunt their prey. Aggression is vital to the dogs’ survival in the wild. An aggressive behavior may have been beneficial when dogs are still living in the wild but today’s society frown at this unwanted behavior because of its potential dangerous consequences. Managing the dog’s aggressive behavior is of vital importance.
Dogs are human’s most wonderful companions. These wonderful loyal companions are not only found in most homes but considered as family members as well. Dogs are renowned for being the most ideal choice for a pet but one that manifests an aggressive behavior would certainly cause its owners great problems. Pet owners weighed down with the dog’s aggression often have to decide to have the dog put down as the safety of the family would naturally be the first priority. Of course an owner can find ways to manage the aggression of the dog so that the situation will not have such a tragic end. An owner has to know the underlying reasons for the aggression of the pet. To mete out harsh physical punishment to an aggressive dog that had caused a serious injury will never stop the dog’s aggression. Physical punishment may even worsen the dog’s aggression.
A vet consultation is necessary if the usually well behaved pet has suddenly taken to snarling, growling and biting. The sudden change in behavior can be due to an underlying medical concern. Stressed with pain, a usually friendly dog can bite when touched. Another way of stopping dog aggression is to neuter or spay the pet as a dominant personality is often seen in intact dogs.
The dog’s aggression can be caused by some circumstances in its environment. Dogs are food motivated and very territorial. It is not uncommon for dogs especially those that are not well socialized to exhibit an aggressive temperament if a threat to its territory is perceived. The dog’s aggression can be prevented if the owner would not expose the pet to such situations.
Many dogs are euthanized because of aggression. Dog aggression is not impossible to correct but this is not an easy behavioral problem to manage either. Socialization and obedience training that would increase the patience threshold of the dog would be beneficial. Dog owners will be overwhelmed with the task of managing the pet’s aggression. The help of an animal behaviorist or a professional dog trainer would be necessary in creating a program that will modify the aggressive behavior of the pet.
