How to cure the dog’s upset stomach?
Dogs are not only voracious eaters, these animals are also indiscriminate eaters so that if they have ingested food and non-food items that do not agree with their system, they would suffer from an upset stomach. Dogs are well loved pets but owners can’t help but be exasperated by the pet’s fondness for eating spoiled food and non-food items. In spite of being well fed, dogs would appear to be always hungry thus anything that catch their fancy would be ingested.
A dog’s upset stomach can be due to a number of reasons. Although the most common culprit is dietary indiscretion, some dogs are noted to have sensitive stomach so that they are predisposed to gastrointestinal concerns. In some dogs, stomach upset can simply be the result of a change in diet or it can also be a symptom of an existing but undiagnosed medical concern the results to a weak immune system.
Generally, the pet’s upset stomach would not be serious to require veterinary attention. The dog’s condition can be resolved at home and in a day or two the pet would be its usual energetic self again. As upset stomach is a common problem with canines, the owner would know what must be done when the dog vomits, have diarrhea and passes gas.
A dog with an upset stomach will be less energetic due to the discomfort caused by the pain in the belly. Dog owners would know that the pet would never pass up the chance to eat. A dog with an upset stomach may take a few bites or may altogether turn away from food . Dog owners have to carefully observe the dog as when the dog’s diarrhea or vomit contains blood, a veterinarian must be consulted at once. These are symptoms of a more serious illness and not just an ordinary stomach upset.
Normally , a dog with an upset stomach is fasted. Older dogs are normally fasted for 24 hours. Younger ones must be given easy to digest food in smaller amounts. Fasting is done to rest the stomach. Dehydration is a serious concern that can results from diarrhea and vomiting thus the pet must be encouraged to drink. Because of the stomach pain the dog may refuse to drink water. The pet must be encouraged to drink water to replenish the fluids lost through diarrhea and vomiting. Ice cubes will be more interesting thus the dog will be encouraged to replenish lost fluids. After the stomach has rested, the dog can be allowed to have small amount of boiled chicken and rice.
