Size of the Aquarium

Glass tanks are in general much cheaper than acrylic tanks but are usually heavier. They have a tendency to spring leaks eventually but this is easily fixed using silicon aquarium sealant. They aren’t made in so many different shapes as acrylic tanks. If you are thinking about an out of the ordinary shaped aquarium you will normally need to choose acrylic.

Acrylic tanks are higher priced than all-glass tanks but are lighter in weight and, since they are constructed from one piece, do not usually leak. Care must be taken not to scratch the outer surface of the aquarium and you must not use any harsh cleaning materials on them since this will scratch the exterior causing it less than clear.

Which Shape Should You Choose?

The traditional rectangular aquarium is definitely the best shape for an aquarium because it has a high water to surface area ratio which allows the greatest gas exchange. In spite of this if you prefer a less common shape then you will need to make sure aeration is good in order for the fish to get sufficient oxygen. Acrylic aquariums are available in a wide variety of shapes which includes round, cylindrical, hexagon, octagon and made into coffee tables or wall mounted.
