Housing And Other Care Information – Exotic Pet Corn Snake Care Sheet

Cage (Vivarium)
A 20 gallon long makes a good sized cage for a corn snake. Even five feet long fully grown adult corn snakes, only require a cage about three feet long by fifteen to eighteen inches high by fifteen inches from front to back. In fact, this size is big enough for a pair of Corn Snakes.

It is ok to keeping two snakes in one cage, but three or more is too much. In other hand, snakes don’t like big wide open space. So, it is no good getting an adult size cage for hatchling. The wide space will stress this young corn snakes out.

Corn snakes are good at climbing, squeezing out very small holes, and can also use their bodies to push the screen top of a poorly fitted cage. Corn snakes are excellent escape artist, so picking a solid cage with a secure top is very important. Some snakes will constantly rub their nose against screened top of the cage to find a way out. The resulting scratch should be treated with an antiseptic and antibiotic ointment. Always evaluate the furnishings in the enclosure to provide a more natural environment. It is a good idea to use plants and many hiding spots in a large cage to make the corn snake feel secure.

Hiding Place
Hiding spots and plants for climbing and resting should be provided. A hide box, upturned cardboard box or plastic tube will do, should be provided that is just large enough for the corn snake to hide away and curl up in. Hollow bark “logs” (obtainable from most reptile pet stores) make a good choice to get “natural” look. Ideally, a hiding spot should be available in both the cooler and warmer ends of the enclosure.

A young hatchling will eat a pinkie mice every three days or so. Gradually, as hatchling gets bigger; feed it every four, five or six days. Around the time it is getting out to six days, it will be swallowing down a pinkie in next to no time, so try it with another one just as the tail of the first one disappears. If it takes two pinkies ok, continue with this for two or three more feedings and then offer it one fuzzy instead of the two pinkies. It might look too large for you, but if the snake can swallow it without difficulty, it is not too big. If you feed too much at one feeding session, or feed a prey item that is too big, your snake won’t swallow it and will spit it out after trying. A general rule for food size is that up to 11D2 the snake’s body girth is acceptable.

After a several more weeks of one fuzzy, repeat the process you did with pinkies. When your corn snake swallows a fuzzy easily, then try to feed it with two. And after a few feedings with two fuzzies, try it with small adult mice. A full grown Corn snake can eat a medium to large mouse.

How to feed a corn snake
Frozen prey need to be completely thawed and warmed slightly before feeding. After thawing, place the prey on a small plastic dish and place the dish in the cage and leave the snake to it. If the snake won’t eat it after few hours, then remove it and throw it away.

The pets are depending on their owners. Always keep in mind that the cage for pet corn snake should provide the same environmental conditions that the corn snake needs in order to survive. Make sure that you find the right place in your house where you will place the cage
