Horse Fencing – The Solar Powered Variety Is Often The Most Practical

There are a wide variety of horse fencing enclosures you can look at when seeking a containment system for your horses. Electrical fencing may be the right choice for you as it can be permanent, temporary and easily moved. Other options often rely on sturdy immovable construction which may be great for some but, if you need to alter the size of enclosures this may be the right choice.

Basically, there are two essential components to electric fencing. One of the components send the current out and the other component is the negative or neutral element that provide for a complete circuit of electricity. There is a line that the energy runs through that runs around the enclosure. The negative or neutral elements are made up of the negative terminal portal on the charger and all the conductors that are connected to it.

When you hook the neutral end into the positively charged energizer you will have a complete circuit. If the horse should touch the wiring at any point along the fence they essentially shorten the circuit and they become the bridge for the current to flow through. However, there needs to be enough water in the ground for the current to continue on and reach the terminal. The water acts as a conductor, so if the ground is dry or even frozen, the fence will not be effective.

Proper grounding and the terminal energizer are the most important elements in this system. If the current can not reconnect back to the terminal through proper grounding the fence will not work. If the energizer become faulty for any reason, there will be no current produced.

Installing the grounding correctly the first time will save you time and money later on. Improper ground is one of the most common cause for ineffective electric fencing. To solve this you can do several things. Add more grounding rods, get a more powerful charger terminal or you can run a neutral wire six inches away from the active wires and when the animal touches both at the same time it will put for an effective charge.

You need energy to run the charger and there are several ways to accomplish this. You can plug it in, use batteries or get yourself a solar powered charger. Since finding an electrical outlet may be difficult on your property and batteries die and need replacing, the solar powered option may be the best option for you. They work all year long, even in overcast weather conditions and supplies energy constantly to the charger.

Solar powered energizers work even in prolonged cloudy weather an in the heat or cold. Sometimes chargers are hit by lightning and destroyed. This rarely happens with the solar powered chargers and are the best choice for any type of climate.

The problem of an energy surge is one to keep in mind too. It sometimes happens that the main source of electricity will suddenly send way too much electricity to the charger and it blows it out. This is impossible to accomplish with the solar unit as its energy source is the sun. So, the electric option may be the right one for you when you are looking to set up horse fencing on your property.
