High Quality, Nutritious, Healthy Dog Food – Critical for Your Pet’s Health
High Quality, Nutritious, Healthy Dog Food is the Key to Your Dog’s Long Term Good Health
When you buy dog food in a grocery store or a pet supermarket, the nutritional value of the food is probably low. Because of that, you may be slowly killing your dog. I’ll talk more about that later.
Think about our own health and nutrition. Eating fast food or other unhealthy food is not good for our own health. That type of food will lead to disease and a breakdown in our bodies over time.
The same thing is true for our dogs. An unhealthy diet (one lacking in good nutrition) results in gradual deterioration and increased disease in our beloved companions.
Veterinarians are treating dogs for heart disease, kidney failure, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. These ailments were much less prevalent before the introduction of commercial dog food.
True pet lovers want their dogs to live long, healthy, and happy lives. My dog gives me unconditional love even though I many times don’t deserve it. They rely on us to take good care of them. I owe my little guy the very best nutrition.
You have possibly seen a picture of my dog, Romeo, on the internet. He is a 6 year-old mutt with a beautiful coat of hair. He gets compliments on it all the time. He has been fed high quality, nutritious dog food for 5 years now. He is the healthiest, sweetest, happiest dog we have ever owned.
In the first paragraph of this article, I mentioned that you may be slowly killing your dog if you don’t feed a very high quality, nutritious, healthy dog food. You may think this is a very strong statement. But I’m not by myself. The Animal Protection Institute has published an article, “What’s Really in Pet Food.” It includes information that should be a major concern to all of us.
As the article states, most of the food we provide our dogs is “unfit for human consumption.”
This includes both meat and grains. Is that what we want to feed our dogs – food that is unfit for human consumption?
You can’t properly evaluate the quality of a dog food by simply reading an ingredient label. The label may say it is a “premium” or “top quality” dog food, but it may be far from that.
When you look at an ingredient label, it may appear that the bag contains a quality, nutritious, healthy dog food. But if the food is bought in a store, it could be 6-18 months old.
If you are told by a pet product store owner or employee that the food is fresh, they are probably being dishonest or don’t know what they are talking about.
The older that bag of food, the more the nutritional value of the food deteriorates. Major causes of this deterioration include bacteria, heat, and mold.
Another major factor in determining a good dog food is the cooking method. It is best that the food is cooked at a low temperature and for a short period of time. If you find a food that that claims it is high in nutrition but is cooked at a high temperature or for a long period of time, most of the nutrition has been destroyed.
I suggest that you consider the following 4 factors in selecting a high quality, nutritious, healthy dog food:
1. The food must be very fresh. It should be shipped directly to the customer’s door.
Don’t be concerned if you see chicken “meal” or fish “meal” as one of the ingredients. Chicken meal and fish meal are great ingredients as long as they comes from high quality chicken or fish.
For example, water is removed from the chicken to form chicken meal. So if you see “chicken meal” as the first item on the ingredient label, you know that there is a lot of chicken in the product. If “chicken” is listed as one of the top ingredients, it may be much lower on the list of ingredients when the water is removed. The manufacturer may be trying to mislead the consumer to think that chicken is one of the top ingredients.
For those who are not aware of this, chicken meal may be a much better alternative than chicken. Chicken meal is chicken with the water removed. So if the #1 ingredient is chicken meal, the food contains a high percentage of chicken. If the ingredient label shows chicken as the #1 ingredient, it may fall down the list after the water is removed.
High quality chicken, chicken meal, fish, fish meal, lamb, and venison are excellent meat ingredients.
4. This is critical. Avoid any dog food that contains corn, wheat, artificial preservatives and colorings, steroids, and hormones.
Feeding your dog a high quality, nutritious, healthy dog food is critical to ensuring that your pet lives a long, healthy, and happy life. You are probably like me. I feel I owe that to my little dog.
