Making a coop of your own would provide ]you the opportunity to make various rooms in the coop, and of course modify the food areas in the way you wish. There are so many different things that you can do when you are dealing with your own design, some however still hold to the preference of purchasing their chicken coops.

These will all have different facilities of course, though you will usually find that it features an area for food, and a separate caged area for your birds.
There are many models, particularly the more advanced variety that will come with an outdoor pen. All coops will need some type of pen, but many feel more comfortable with the prefabricated variety. Note that the yard needs to be fenced in with chicken wire due to the fact that chickens like to poke their heads through most fences. If your chickens do become curious and poke their heads out, they will be exposed to predators, and if you’ve gone to the trouble of building a coop, there’s a chance that you want to keep them alive. At this point, it should be relatively obvious just how important the stability of your coop’s systems really is.

It would be a good idea to buy a heat lamp to ensure decent lighting and warmth for your chickens. Keep in mind that your heat lamp needs to be a fair distance away from the floor so that your chickens do not ‘fly’ into it and become injured.
