Dehydration in Puppies: 101

There are a lot of health problems that can be caused by dehydration. Like with humans this condition can happen to any dog at any time. So make sure that as a responsible dog owner you monitor your dog and his health constantly. The last thing you want is a dehydrated dog.

So with that being said you may be wondering how exactly you can tell whether or not your dog is dehydrated. You will find the answer to that question in the following paragraphs where I will show you the symptoms and simple tests you can do.

Lethargy: puppies that are dehydrated usually show signs of lethargy. Since puppies are full of energy, this will be your initial warning signal that they may be dehydrated.

During play times make sure that they have enough water to drink and you should always keep them hydrated during the summer season.

Next, the neck pinch test: this test is very easy to conduct. All you’ll have to do is put your puppy on a table or a counter. Lift the skin at the back of the neck of your puppy.

This is similar to the lifting of the skin when he is given a vaccine. Then let go and watch what happens to the skin. If it goes back into its original place instantly, he is good. If it does not, he is dehydrated.

And one more test: the gum line test. This test, too, is easy to conduct. Simply press your finger against your pup’s gum line. Then remove it and watch how long it takes the blood to refill the area. If it takes a while, your pup is likely to be dehydrated.

So these are the ways to determine dehydration in puppies. The best approach to avoid such a thing from happening is to simply provide enough water.

Giving your puppy proper care will ensure you that they live a long and healthy life. You’ll also have a great and faithful companion for a long, long time.
