Meanwhile, the ears must be clean with no signs of wax, ear mites, or any odor. Similarly, the teeth must also be clean such that there is no evidence of tartar, inflammation of gums and/or bad breath. As regards to the kit’s whiskers, they must not be broken or brittle, and instead they should be long and shiny.
Also make it a point to take a close look at the baby ferret’s nose. Do not be alarmed if the nose is wet or cold as these are not an indictor of health. FSBO Forest Ferret Home
Most wild ferrets are found in forests. This can be an interesting spot for your ferret as well. Trees provide cover from some of their predators, such as hawks. Wild ferrets can live quite comfortably in forests, making their burrows beneath the trees.
Your pet ferret might also like to explore a forest. However, as mentioned above, you should have already trained your ferret to be comfortable with a harness and lead. Ferrets just love to get themselves into small spaces, like burrows. It would be tragic if your fuzzy little guy disappeared down a rabbit hole and refused to come out.
Ferret Cages or Boxes
A good cage or box can make an agreeable ferret home. Just make sure that either one has enough room for ferret toys, sleeping areas with hammocks or sleep sacks, and an area for a little box as well. The more your ferret’s home can emulated a natural environment the more likely your ferret will accept and be comfortable in his new home. Remember, too that ferrets like to sleep most of the day and then roam around at night because they are nocturnal creatures.
Ferret Playground
Owners with more than one ferret might want to think about a playground of sorts instead of a cage. If you have enough room for this kind of thing, you may just end up with some pretty happy ferrets. If the playground that you build offers lots of open spaces interspersed with holes or simulated burrows, well, that’s just ferret heaven!
While it is not recommended that you pay great attention to the baby ferret’s color – since the color will usually change as the kit matures – you should try and stick to the browns or the sables since history shows that these colors bring about the most healthy ferrets. Though it is okay to opt for a rare color baby ferret, note that certain rare colors are susceptible to breeding/health problems. For instance, the panda ferret – with white strips covering its head – is infamous for its hearing problems. Therefore, if you decide to go to the rare route, make sure you know what you’re exactly taking on.
That said it is no different that the cat and dog world of today where selective breeding has led to problems and some of which have become so severe in some breeds of dogs that their medium term existence as a breed could be in jeopardy.
