There’s no doubt that having a pet is a fine hobby for a family. But pets are not without their problems. It can get very expensive buying some pets and paying for the veterinary bills, extremely difficult to know what to do with some of them when you go away on holidays. Cats can devastate the local wildlife and dogs will bark at the neighbours and terrorise visitors.

The perfect pet for a family may well be chickens. Chickens don’t bark at the neighbours, they aren’t expensive, they rarely get sick and if you work it right it’s not a problem having chickens when you go on holidays.

Not only that but chickens are productive, a fridge full of fresh free range eggs is the mouthwatering result from keeping chickens. In many respects chickens make the perfect family pet.

Whilst you can’t really put your chickens on your lap at night in front of the television there is still no doubt that children love chickens as much as adults, ours absolutely adore theirs.

Like all pets however you need to make a little effort to learn about keeping chickens. They will need a place to live, which is variously called a chicken coop, or chicken house or henhouse, and you will need to find a good place to buy one or else learn to make it yourself. The latter can be the cheapest method.

The chickens will sleep in the coop at night but generally are allowed out of the coop during the day, in many cases to run free around your garden. If they do this they will clean up many of the nasty bugs in your garden, though they may scratch the soil and peck at your flowers as they do.

They particularly love to peck at ripe tomatoes.

And if some pecking of your tomatoes is unacceptable then you merely build a chicken run around the coop and allow them to roam throughout their run.

It’s important to learn a little more about feeding chickens as they require certain minimum levels of calcium and protein to lay eggs regularly, so you will need to source high protein foods and shell grit to add the protein and calcium to their feed. You will also need to find good appliances for water and food.

And when holidays come it’s quite possible to provide your chickens with a large reliable supply of food and water and to go away to enjoy yourself.

There is no doubt that keeping is a wonderful occupation for young children, and for adults. There is lots to learn but the learning process is enjoyable and rewarding. Begin your learning before you buy your first chicken, spend some time researching the requirements for chicken housing, and familiarise yourself with the correct feeding of chickens. Then get out there and buy your first hen.

And then you’re on your way to a lifetime of healthy free range eggs delivered to you by some happy healthy hens.

Raising chickens in your yard is a very fun and rewarding experience. By having your own chicken coop, you are doing both to you and the chickens you are raising an enormous a favor. And just think of all of the fresh eggs you will be ready to enjoy!

You can feel particularly good knowing where your breakfast eggs are coming from – your own backyard. Even the chicken dung can be composted and used as top of the range manure on your garden vegetables and plants. But before we are getting started, we are going to have to consider what sort of hen house you would like to have, a portable chicken coop or a fixed one.

Portable chicken coops are generally smaller in size than their fixed counterparts, but if you don’t need a larger number of hens in your yard you should be fine. Do not cram too many birds into too tiny of space. Just make sure that each chicken has at least 3-4 ft of space to move around. Otherwise you may endanger your hens’ health, and as a consequence also the egg production. On the other hand, if your coop turns out to be too large, though there is not really a “too” giant, you can always add another hen.

Portable chicken coops have got the edge they are straightforward to move around. This makes it comfortable for you to move your chicken tractor to where you can keep an eye fixed on your hens. Look out for predators in your area. Your neighbors’ cats and dogs may be a threat to your chickens. Dependent on where you reside, there may be foxes, badgers and other predators that you will have to protect your chickens from. Hence, moving your chicken tractor to an area where you may have a watch on them is a good idea.

However hens are strong birds and you actually will not have to fret about them that much; Just as long as you make the effort to guard them from the more determined animals you’ll be able to enjoy the eggs and the chickens for many years to come. Did I mention chickens make phenomenal pets? Well, they do! And they make a wonderful family experience. Raising chickens whether in a conveyable chicken coop or other sort of hen house is a rewarding and unique experience. One that can make a lasting family memory!

The kids have been pestering you for weeks about getting a pet. You consider getting a dog but you know that the barking will annoy the neighbours. And you also know that you don’t want a dog pooping all over the garden. Cats are nice but they scratch furniture. Have you considered keeping chickens as the ideal way to provide low maintenance pets for the kids?

There’s so many reasons why keeping chickens is such a great hobby, and why chickens make such wonderful pets. You’ll never hear a chicken barking, and although a rooster crows there is absolutely no need for you to get a rooster. And kids love having chickens, I know my kids spend hours playing with the chickens.

And there’s one extra bonus to keeping your own chickens, namely lots of free range eggs.

When it comes to buying a pet so few people think about getting chickens. If your council allows you to have chickens at home, and most do, it’s certainly worth considering. However before you buy those first few chickens there’s one thing that you will need. A good chicken house.

Chicken houses need not be big if you only have 3 or 4 hens. It will need a good sheltered nesting area where they can lay their eggs as well as perches for them to sleep on at night.

It’s not hard to build yourself a henhouse. It’s basically just treated timber (for outdoor use) and some wire mesh, and some materials to cover in part of the henhouse so they have some shelter at night. Usually don’t need a floor as it sits on the ground.

For a small number of chickens, say 3 or 4, it is not necessary that it be particularly large. For 3 or 4 chickens it’s perfectly possible to build a hen house with handles on one end and wheels on the other so that you can move around the garden. During the day most people allow the chickens to free range in the garden eating those pesky bugs that have been attacking your vegetables and flowers.

If the kids want chickens as pets then get them involved with you building a chicken house . It’s a great handyman project for you to do with the kids on the weekend. You should find plans to get houses on the Internet and it’s not particularly expensive or difficult to do.

So if you’ve been searching around for a great idea for a pet for the children and consider getting your own chickens. Spend some quality time with the kids showing in your handyman skills building a simple chicken house and you’ll have happy kids, happy chickens and lots of eggs for dinner.

Then find yourself a good recipe book, learn how to make omelettes or soufflé, cook up a fine dinner for the family and you’ll be a hero.

The satisfaction that one gets by feeding birds with own hands is past comparison. A lot of people are incredibly ardent on feeding birds. In fact it’s a common appearance to notice lots of people feed birds on regular basis. Nevertheless, very few of them are aware of the dos and don’ts of it. It’s for this reason many bird feeding myths are doing the rounds these days. Let’s understand more about the most common misconceptions of the same.

Speaking about bird feeding parable, the first thing that comes to mind is dependency of birds on handouts. It is commonly said that birds become reliant on the feeder once they start taking the feed. However, this is not the circumstance at all. The feed which you give to a bird does not equate to its required feed. What you give to the bird normally compensates just for 25% of the complete feed. This is a proven fact by numerous researches. It merely implies despite being fed by you the bird will still hunt for other avenues to satisfy their every day food requirements.

An additional usual parable states that rice is harmful for birds. A lot of people are under the belief that feeding rice to birds would make them swell up and perhaps even cause death. However, the truth is that rice is an tremendously nutritious food for birds. So, whether you feed your bird uncooked or leftover rice, you do not need to worry about any adverse effects on his fitness.

Peanut butter adds to the complete no-no list of the bird feed, for many. However, this too isn’t anything however a big myth. Many individuals refrain from feeding peanut butter to the birds thinking that it will get trapped in the throat of the bird and may therefore contribute to conditions such as suffocation and choking. Nevertheless, here too the reality is stark opposite as peanut butter is great for the birds in every sense. It is totally enjoyed and relished by majority of the bird species in terms of taste. Plus it also fulfills the nutritional requirement of the birds by providing calories and fats in generous amounts. Some birds which favor peanut butter as feed are woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and jays. In case you find peanut butter too sticky and thus tough to feed, you could add some cornmeal to it in order to make it crumbly.

Most folks additionally believe that bird feed never goes bad. This myth as with others is entirely false and like any other food, bird feed could also go bad. The odds of bird food decay are noticeably elevated if it is not kept correctly. The seeds have a tendency to dry out if kept for a long time and so lose their nutritive powers. So, you must make a calculated attempt to keep bird feed stored correctly by maintaining it in a cool and dry location.

So, hopefully the aforementioned info has well demystified all your misconceptions
